Firebirds cash in on loophole
Damien Stannard
The push to appoint a fulltime coach has backfired on Netball Queensland with Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke yet to meet the position description. NQ confirmed they appointed Jencke despite knowing she had not achieved high performance coaching accreditation, the minimum requirement to coach in the ANZ Championship.
Despite being appointed in August, Jencke withdrew from last month's course, which means Queensland will start the season next month without a fully qualified coach at the helm of its flagship team. "We have an agreement with Rose to complete the course. It's part of her position description." said NQ chief executive Cameron O'Hara. "It's a lengthy process but she doesn't have to do it before the season starts."
Jencke was appointed Firebirds coach after the sacking of netball great Vicki Wilson. A series of run-ins with the NQ board was the last straw for Wilson. She has a high performance accreditation, however the team's inability to reach the finals and her inability to take the position on fulltime coast the former Queensland and Australian skipper dearly.
Jencke's appointment was made possible after NQ applied for a special exemption from Netball Australia rules. The country's governing body changed its coaching structure last year, with the high performance course replacing the equivalent Level 3 accreditation.
To install Jencke, a former national assistant coach, queensland sought approval from a Netball Australia eligibility panel. "The accreditation system changed about a year ago and the rules were not updated," said NA chief executive Kate Palmer. "They (the panel) consider the candidate over a range of competencies and they approved the appointment."
Palmer strongly endorsed Jencke, who was also an assistant at the AIS, Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Kestrels. But Netball Australia's boss warned the loophole would not stay open forever and that she expected Jencke to complete the course. "She is enrolled in that and I'd expect her to complete it," she said. "I expect Queensland would organise one that suits Rose. I know she's really committed, a unique person and a unique coach." |

They also have a lot of great netball related photos which again they don't put online. Here's a recent one from the Sunday Mail. Not completely sure what the occasion was, but who cares!

Geitzy doing some of her finest work in that photo.
I absolutely love that dress she is wearing, might have to ask her about it next time I see her. |

Is it just me, or does Geitz look a little like Johanna Griggs in that photo? |

She certainly makes Therese and Anna look rather frumpy. |
